'School
health and hygiene programme' under Yamuna Action Plan (phase-2)
TERI,
with support from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and
the Public Works Department (W/S and sanitation departments), Government
of Haryana, initiated the 'School health and hygiene programme' under
the Yamuna Action Plan (phase 2). This school
education programme on health, hygiene, and sanitation was launched
in Gurgaon, Sonepat, and Panipat.
The three-year
programme was initiated in more than 15 schools in these towns on
6 October 2006 with the following objectives.
To assess the knowledge,
attitude, and practices towards health, hygiene, and sanitation in
schools
To educate students
on related problems
To build the capacity
of students and school staff on related issues
To encourage the general
public to follow the example of school children in adopting better
health, hygiene, and sanitation practices
The following
issues will be addressed through this programme.
Drinking water facility
Provision for clean,
safe, and separate toilets for girls and boys
Adequate dustbins
Regular and active
immunization programmes
Regular health checkups
and referral services
Management of solid
waste at the school level
Initiatives for water
conservation and collection techniques
All this will
be achieved through regular activities with the members of the eco-
club of the targeted schools. The various activities include.
Waste segregation
at school level
Implementing the 3Rs
of waste management (reduction, reuse, and recycling) at the school
level
Vermicomposting
Water purification
Water conservation
Awareness on personal
hygiene and sanitation through competitions and other hands-on activities
