BEACON- school energy education programme

The school education programme titled BEACON (building energy awareness on conservation) was implemented by TERI with the support of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. At the pilot stage 30 schools in Delhi were selected as the target group. Areas of work under this programme included development of a national curriculum on energy and conducting a series of awareness activities on energy related issues.

Under curriculum development, middle school syllabus was targeted for the identification of existing 'energy' linkages. Feedback from a select group of teachers was taken to assess the school perspective in the entire exercise. Their recommendations have been documented and presented both as detailed lesson plans and specific energy pointers.

Painting Competition – ‘BEACON’ project

Three teachers’ training workshops were organized under this project for the member schools. The workshops were educative both for the teachers and TERI colleagues, as the participatory approach in them was a major success.
Energy related resource material has also been developed under the project. This includes posters, stickers, brochures, and a booklet on energy.

The project observed its formal closure on 5 November 2004.
