BEACON- A school education programme on energy conservation and its efficient use

View brochure

In 2004, TERI, with the support of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, implemented a pilot project, BEACON (building energy awareness on conservation). This school education programme was a huge success, and was also awarded by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. Hence, it was decided, in September 2006, to extend the programme across the country for a period of 15 months, so that more people could be sensitized and made aware of the pressing energy problems facing the country, as well as the world, today.

To carry out the programme, the country was divided into five regions--North, South, East, West, and North-East. Keeping in mind the supply and demand of energy in each of the states of these zones, the following cities were selected for the implementation of the programme. North – Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) and Rohtak (Haryana) South – Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and hiruvananthapuram (Kerela)
East – Kolkatta (West Bengal) and Ranchi (Jharkhand)
West – Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Pune (Maharashtra)
North-East – Guwahati (Assam) and Shillong (Meghalaya)

Apart from workshops and group discussions, a number of activities have been lined up under the programme for the coming months.
