Among the industrialized and developing countries, Canada consumes the most per capita energy in the world. Among the industrialized countries, Italy consumes the least

Euro II fuel emission norms are mass emission norms, which are 2 to 3 times more stringent than the current permissible carbon monoxide emissions in the transport sector depending upon the reference weight of the vehicle. The corresponding tightening of norms for hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides together would have to be about 3 to 4 times more than the existing ones. Similarly, for new four-wheeled diesel passenger vehicles, the new carbon monoxide emission norms would be 1.2 to 2 times more stringent compared to its present levels

Areas of the Indian Ocean are covered by a huge haze that consists of soot and sulphur particles from fossil fuels. Scientists believe that this has been transmitted from transport and industries in SE Asia, China and S Asia. There is a fear that this might move into the monsoon system causing acid rain in the sub continent.

The central government has decided that the fuel used in the new non-commercial vehicles being used in the national capital region of Delhi should not have more than 0.05% sulphur. This is in accordance to a Supreme Court ruling in keeping to the requirements of the Euro II norms.

There are about 3000 products made from crude oil. Other than fuels such as petrol, diesel, crude oil is used to make products including: ink, crayons, bubble gum, dishwashing liquids, deodorant, eyeglasses, records, and tires.

Coal mines are dangerous as they can cause death due to roof falls and explosions. Many accidents have occurred in these mines resulted in thousands of deaths.

The world's first well-known nuclear accident occurred at Windscale (now Sellafield), UK in 1957 when a reactor built to make plutonium for bombs caught fire. Since this had never happened before, no one knew what to do. After 2 days of uncontrolled burning the fire was put off. Large amounts of radioactivity spewed out of the filter stack and the extent to which this damaged people's health is still controversial.

Fossil fuels were formed during the time of the dinosaurs when plants and animals died. Their decomposed remains gradually changed over the years to make coal, oil and natural gas.

The accident that occurred at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania, on March 28, 1979, was the most serious in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant operating history. It opened people’s eyes to the problems that can be faced and brought about many changes and regulations to contain such problems in the future.

Until the 26th of April 1986 Chernobyl was a small town near the river Pripiat in Ukraine, not known to the world. Its name was associated to the V. I. Lenin Nuclear Power Plant located in its vicinity. On 26th morning a big explosion released clouds of deadly radioactive material into the atmosphere that continued for over 10 days. Hundreds of thousands of people living in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus had to abandon their homes within the thirty-kilometer zone of extreme contamination. It is estimated that over 15 million people have been victimized by the disaster in some way or the other.
